Website Subscription vs. One-Time Build: The Real Five-Year Cost
A one-time website is never actually one-time. Here is what a typical small business site really costs over five years, line by line, compared with a monthly plan that includes everything.
When a business owner compares a $5,000 website to $149 a month, the math seems obvious. Five thousand once, or nearly nine thousand over five years? Buy it outright.
The trouble is that the $5,000 figure is not the cost of the website. It is the cost of the first version of the website, delivered on launch day, before anything else happens. Everything that happens after launch is where the real cost lives, and it is almost never in the quote.
This article walks through the five-year cost of both approaches, line by line. The numbers are illustrative, drawn from what we have seen taking over sites, and your situation will differ. But the shape of the comparison is the same almost every time.
What a one-time build actually costs
Let’s take a typical small business site: six to ten pages, built by a freelancer or small agency, delivered for a one-time fee. Here is what the next five years usually look like.
The build. Call it $5,000. Some cost less, plenty cost more, but it is a fair middle.
Hosting. Somewhere between $28 and $60 a month for basic shared hosting, plus a domain and an SSL certificate. That is bare bones: a slot on a shared server and nothing else. No maintenance, no uptime monitoring, no vulnerability checks, no one watching it. Call it $50 a month, or $3,000 over five years.
Maintenance. A site built on a content management system needs updates to the platform, the theme, and every plugin, and those updates break things. Most owners either pay for a maintenance plan, often $50 to $150 a month, or skip it and pay for the consequences later. Call it $75 a month, or $4,500 over five years.
Edits. Your hours change. You hire someone. You add a service. Each change is either a support ticket billed by the hour, typically $75 to $150, or a task you do yourself and lose an evening to. One hour a month at $100 is $6,000 over five years, and that is a conservative pace.
The redesign. A site built today looks dated in three to four years, and the platform underneath it usually needs a rebuild by then anyway. Most owners pay for a second build somewhere in year four, and it does not cost what the first one did. Inflation alone pushes a $5,000 build past $6,000 four years later, and a site that has been neglected costs more still, because the content has to be untangled and migrated before anyone can design anything. Call it $6,500.
The things nobody budgets for. A hack cleanup. A plugin that stopped being maintained. An outage on the weekend of your biggest promotion. A speed score that has drifted into the 40s and quietly costs you customers. These are hard to price, so they get left out, which is exactly why they hurt.
Add it up without the surprises: $5,000 + $3,000 + $4,500 + $6,000 + $6,500 comes to about $25,000 over five years, or roughly $415 a month. And at the end of it, you own a site that is due for another rebuild.

Total: $8,940 to $9,439 over five years, or $149 a month, with nothing else to budget for.
The comparison that matters
Put side by side, the one-time build costs nearly three times as much over five years, and that is before counting the things that go wrong. It also delivers less: slower hosting, edits that cost money or time, and a site that ages out.
But the cost is only half of it. The other half is who is responsible. With a one-time build, the day after launch the site is your problem. Every update, every fix, every “why does the contact form not work” is on you or on whoever you can find to pay. With a subscription, it stays our problem, and we have every incentive to keep it working because you can leave any month you decide we are not worth it.
When a one-time build makes sense
To be fair, there are cases. If you have an in-house developer who can maintain the site, the maintenance and edit costs above drop toward zero and the math changes. If your site is a temporary landing page for a single campaign, a subscription is overkill. And if you simply prefer to own the problem, that is a legitimate preference.
For most small and medium-sized businesses, though, the website is not a project. It is a utility, like the phone line, that needs to work every day and change whenever the business does. Utilities are billed monthly for a reason.
